Books 6 and 7 [09 Mar 2004|01:52pm]
Book # 6: The Book of the Body by Frank Bidart

Lovely lovely book of poetry. Frank Bidart should marry me, except that he is an old gay man. This book had "Ellen West" in it, which was a nice thing.

Book # 7: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

I don't know why it took me so long to finally it pick. As e'bess says, it is exactly my kind of book. I need my own copy, now.

Book # 5: The Only Girl in the Car by Kathy Dobie [28 Feb 2004|11:54am]
For Womens Studies.

Another memior book / coming of age story. I was not impressed by the writing. The first half of the book talks about her family, setting up Kathy's story. At the end of the book I wanted to know more about Cindy and Beth Ann and Michael and Stephen and Bill. It was an enh.

Book # 4: Four Plays by Aristophanes translations by William Arrowsmith [19 Feb 2004|12:22am]
For my Classics class.

The Clouds
The Birds
Lysistrata
The Frogs

Excellent. I love this class, I loved these plays. I am writing my LCA play for the summer based on many of the happenings in Aristophanes comedies.

Book # 3: She's Not There by Jennifer Boylan [19 Feb 2004|12:20am]
For Women's Studies. Jennifer Boylan used to be James Boylan. Etc, etc. Reaction paper, to be turned in tomorrow, under the cut.

Book # 2: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison [01 Feb 2004|10:23am]
Read for my Womens Studies class. I am still digesting it. I like the style, the slightly stilted, elevated language. I love words, so I love the words of the book. The story is piecemeal, so I am still pasting it together in my head. I had a dread, the whole book, of what would happen at the end. As I went on, I read more and more slowly so I could protect Pecola. It, of course, didn't work. I might have put it down and not finished it for weeks if I didn't need to write a paper on it.

50 Book Plan [21 Jan 2004|08:01pm]
I am going to read (at least 50 books this year). I'll be writing them in here, and at the end of the year I'll gather up the whole list.

Book #1: The Alienist by Caleb Carr.

Reread of a favored book from High School. I didn't remember the Comstock parts from when I read it the first time. I also didn't remember the second affecting murder to the murderer-hunting gang. Still a great book. Hopefully I'll have time to get to the second one soon.

Angel: The Trial [23 Dec 2003|08:43am]
Season 2, episode 9.

Rewatching The Trial was a little like the first time I rewatched Crush after Season 5 BtVS. Creepy with the foreshadowing.

The Host talks about things falling apart. Link that with his future reference to slouching toward bethlehem. Darla talks about Jasmine in Angel's garden. Holtz is discussed in the flashbacks. That's a lot of threads pulling together, already.

Lines:

Jasmine - it blooms at night - I remember what that was like.

You're a big hunk of hero sandwich.

You're mising the point here: things fall apart.

In this place the journey is all.

Death is the final challenge.

How'd you think this would end?

Socialism! Ah! [05 Nov 2003|02:07pm]
[ mood | listless ]

I recently finished reading The Road to Wigan Pier by George Orwell. It is my floormmate Elinor's book and she told me that I had to read it.

It was an interesting read. Especially since I have realized that I have no concept of the ideas of Socialism, Communism, Facism, or Capitalism. I counter that deficit by being able to give you vast amounts of information about calculus and biology.

The second to last chapter in the book was very interesting to me. I'm not sure what it means (that it was interesting). See above re: lack of understanding of economic systems. It reminded me of the Jasmine arc on Angel. I spent a goodly amount of time relating the Jasmine story to El so that she could see how Angel is all about Socialism, only I don't exactly know how.

I almost feel inspired to read more about such things, if only so I can make a very intelligent relation between them and TV. I say almost because I don't think I am quite that ready to literize myself over TV.

It was a nice connection to make though.

And I am going to show El Hush rather soon. [A note on that- she doesn't think she will like BtVS, based on the one episode she has seen. I have deduced that the one episode she has seen was either Villians or Grave, neither of which is fair to be the base of an opinion of the show as a whole. I think she will like Hush. I think she will also like Gingerbread.]

...and then he went through all these changes! [01 Nov 2003|06:31pm]
I cut off the purple parts of my hair [this morning, myself].

It seems oddly short now, though I know it is still crazily long.

There is a big pile of hair in my garbage can [bin]. Strange.

Today I watched: Phases & Becoming II. Oz is so cute.

Also I made a thing for [info]eirefaerie, but she is not coming online and playing Scrabble with me. None of this is related, for those playing the home game.

[info]littlexander is sending me Angel. Except that the mail is on strike. I thought I lost 3 postcards but they fell out of my Embryology book when I pulled it off the shelf. Perhaps I should read that book more often. 5 more people getting checked off the postcard list, except not. See above re: mail being on strike.

I haven't been writing very often [sporadically] but I intend on coming back to it soon. Perhaps this reading week.

This entry brought to you by PANDEMONIUM! Do you know what that means? That means CHAOS! [01 Nov 2003|09:48am]
First Dolittle said.

Then T-Lil said.

I miss

A flashlight and pink fuzzy slippers being the only protection you need.
Singing the campers to sleep.
The fancy new cereal machines at breakfast.
Walking around camp at 4 am.
Campers with monkeys.
Frollicking in the rain.
Magoo!
Fire watch (also figuring out how to make the fire alarm stop being so loud).
Having a twin conveniently next door.
Hair dying parties.
Egan leaving candy in the campers' shoes.
Cookie dough.
Cheese on the wall.
Leaving messages all over the cabin.
Quintessential grilled cheese.
Stars.
Cleaning obsessed campers who clean the fireplace, clock, fire extinguisher, and ask for a ladder to clean the roof.
Elephant, rabbit, monkey, bowl full of jelly, work of art, charlie's angels...
Talking to the wall.
The word of the day.

And many many more things.

Halloween Stickers [31 Oct 2003|03:08pm]
[ mood | nostalgic ]

How cute is the Google Halloween image?

This morning I was thinking about camp. I opened up my box of writing and stickers to get out my Halloween ones and remembered the first week Cadette Equestrians and my signs inside the bathroom stalls. One of them had stickers and said 'take one.' At the end of the week I was talking to the campers and asked if I should do the signs again for the next week. They said I should, just not the sticker one.

They were concerned because Samantha apparently had taken to walking around very late at night mumbling 'need more stickers' and had them stuck all over her PJs.
